Heat and calima pre-alert: advice for visiting Santiago del Teide

The Canary Islands Directorate-General for Emergencies has declared a maximum-temperature pre-alert across the archipelago from Monday 14 September. Tenerife may reach 32-33°C on Monday in southern and western uplands and summits, with a possible increase on Tuesday. A calima dust pre-alert is also active across all islands.

How this may affect a visit

The municipality’s upper areas, roadside viewpoints and Chinyero walks may experience more heat and airborne dust than the coast. Calima can also reduce visibility from Los Poleos, Archipenque and other viewpoints. Forecasts may change, and a pre-alert does not mean every area will reach the same temperature.

Practical advice

• Avoid walking or exercising around the hottest part of the day.
• Carry enough water, sun protection and light clothing.
• Reduce exertion if you feel dizzy, develop a headache or have breathing difficulty.
• People with respiratory or chronic conditions should take extra care during calima.
