Santiago del Teide, Tenerife

Santiago del Teide entre la costa de Los Gigantes, los pueblos y las montañas

How to choose your area

Los Gigantes is the natural choice for the cliffs, the marina and sea trips. Puerto de Santiago works well as a base for food, walking and moving between the coast and Playa de la Arena. Playa de la Arena suits a beach, promenade and sunset day. Santiago del Teide, Tamaimo and Arguayo offer heritage, local life, mid-altitude scenery and volcanic landscapes.

Suggested itineraries

First visit

Archipenque viewpoint, Los Gigantes marina, Los Guíos Beach and lunch by the sea. If there is time, finish with late light at Playa de la Arena.

Sea and nature

Choose a sea activity in the morning and leave the afternoon for a coastal walk or beach. Check sea conditions before paying and allow time for operator changes.

Villages and volcanoes

Combine the old town with Tamaimo, Arguayo or Chinyero. This is the right plan for travellers who want more than the coast and accept slower mountain roads.

What to book and check

Activity listings bring together local boat, whale-watching, kayak and diving options. Business listings help you find restaurants, bars, accommodation, taxis and useful services. Commercial presence is identified clearly; editorial recommendations are not paid rankings. Check hours, meeting point, accessibility, cancellation and sea conditions before travelling.

Santiago del Teide covers one of the most varied corners of western Tenerife. The municipality brings together the cliffs of Los Gigantes, the marina and coast of Puerto de Santiago, the volcanic sand of Playa de la Arena, the historic centre above 900 metres and the inland villages of Tamaimo, Arguayo and Chinyero. Use this guide before choosing a beach, route, restaurant or boat trip. It is not one compact resort: distance, bends and elevation matter.

What Santiago del Teide is

The name refers both to the municipality and its administrative town. For visitors, think in connected areas rather than one centre: the coast has beaches, sea trips, accommodation and restaurants; inland you find volcanic scenery, villages, heritage and walking routes. Choose according to whether you want to swim, see the cliffs, book a sea activity, walk through Chinyero or experience local life.

Old town and inland areas

What to see and do

Start with the landscape that brought you here, then give the municipality a second look. The cliffs make sense from several angles: Archipenque gives the wide view, the marina brings the wall down to sea level and Los Guíos Beach puts it above you. The coast also offers whale watching, kayaking, sailing, diving and jet-ski options. Check the operator, departure point, sea-condition policy and the day’s timetable before booking.

Inland, Santiago del Teide town preserves heritage and leads towards the mid-altitude villages. Tamaimo offers a local stop and Arguayo connects with pottery tradition. Chinyero adds lava and pine forest with routes of different difficulty. Masca is reached from this area but deserves its own plan, not a rushed coastal stop.

Beaches and coast

Playa de la Arena and Los Guíos Beach are the best-known references, but they suit different visits. La Arena has a broader urban frontage and nearby services; Los Guíos is smaller, under the marina and cliffs. Flags, swell and lifeguard instructions override any editorial description. Check sea conditions before booking and keep away from rocks, pools and exposed edges when the sea is rough.

Plans by available time

1

Two or three hours

Choose Archipenque, the Los Gigantes marina and a short coastal walk.

2

Half a day

Combine a beach or sea activity with lunch in Puerto de Santiago or Playa de la Arena.

3

A full day

Alternate coast and inland: Los Gigantes, a meal, then the old town, Tamaimo, Arguayo or Chinyero.

4

Without a car

Prioritise the coast and check TITSA for your date. Plan the return before starting an inland route.

Food, accommodation and bookings

Los Gigantes, Puerto de Santiago and Playa de la Arena hold most of the tourist offer. Browse restaurants, bars and accommodation by area, then confirm services, hours, photographs and booking links in each listing. Featured listings are clearly commercial and are not an independent quality ranking.

For activities with online availability, compare products and conditions before booking. Departures depend on the operator and sea conditions. For accommodation, check location, cancellation terms and transport before paying.

Getting around

From Tenerife South, the coast is reached by road towards the west; from Tenerife North, the route is different. Bus services connect the main areas, but schedules change with seasons and works. Parking in Los Gigantes is limited and streets are steep, so read the parking guide before going down to the marina. For Masca, Chinyero and the inland villages, leave enough daylight and check access restrictions and the forecast.

Frequently asked questions

Is Santiago del Teide only the old town?

No. The municipality includes the coast and inland areas: Los Gigantes, Puerto de Santiago, Playa de la Arena, Tamaimo, Arguayo and other settlements.

Which area is best for a first visit?

Los Gigantes for cliffs and sea; Playa de la Arena for beach and services; the old town and Chinyero for inland scenery and heritage.

Can I see everything in one day?

You can make an overview, but not enjoy every area. Choose a coast plan or combine two areas with realistic timings.

Do I need a car?

Not always. The coast has services and bus connections, but a car makes inland villages, routes and viewpoints easier.
