El Tancón and Cueva Azul
A sea cave with a turquoise pool on the Puerto de Santiago coast. Swimming and access are strictly banned due to the danger: it has been linked to several deaths.
El Tancón, home to the cave known as Cueva Azul, is a sea cave carved by the waves on the Puerto de Santiago coast, beside the promenade behind the Hotel Barceló Santiago. Its basalt columns and turquoise water have made it very popular on social media.
Swimming and access are strictly forbidden. Santiago del Teide town council has put up warning signs — which it has to replace often because they get torn down or thrown into the sea — and has announced a bylaw to fine anyone entering this stretch of coast. The currents inside act like a boiling pot that traps, batters and pulls under anyone who goes in: several deaths have been linked to it in recent years.
If you want to see it, do so through photos and videos, or admire the cave from the seafront promenade without climbing down or trying to swim. Always respect the signage and stay away when the sea is rough.
