Routes by area

Organising the visit by area avoids unnecessary journeys and helps you combine beaches, restaurants, activities and viewpoints in a way that makes sense.

Build the itinerary around a base area

Why grouping works

The municipality stretches from the coast up to the mid-altitude villages. Grouping cuts down driving, hunting for parking and changes in altitude. It also leaves room to confirm opening times and adapt the day to the sea or the weather.

A base area does not mean staying put: it is a way of deciding which journeys add something and which just repeat the same road.

Los Gigantes as a base for the sea

Choose Los Gigantes if the main plan is a boat trip, kayak, diving, the marina or Playa de Los Guíos. Add a viewpoint before going down and a meal in the same area. The slopes make it worth parking only once.

Puerto de Santiago can round off the afternoon, but avoid going back to the marina without a reason.

Puerto de Santiago and Playa de la Arena

These areas work for accommodation, beach, walking, restaurants and a day with less logistics. You can give the morning to swimming and the afternoon to walking or eating, adapting the order to the flag and the heat.

Check the height difference before joining them on foot. For some groups, two short walks will be more comfortable.

Old town, Chinyero and the mid-altitude villages

Inland you get heritage, volcanic landscape and hiking. Keep the cooler hours for walking and dress in layers. Do not add the coast until you have confirmed the walking route leaves enough time.

During the blossom season or other events it can get busier. Check the programme and access before setting out.

Masca as a trip of its own

The road, the access rules and the terrain make Masca a plan that deserves margin. Confirm transport, access and any ravine booking. Do not use it as a quick stop between an activity at sea and dinner.

If you want to combine, choose one safe stop on the route and avoid commitments with fixed times afterwards.

One, two or three days

In one day, combine inland and one coastal area following a single direction. In two days, separate Los Gigantes from the old town and the villages. With three days you can give one to Masca or to hiking and keep another flexible for the beach or the sea.

The weather can change the order. Book first whatever depends on an operator and keep the town areas as alternatives.

Check before fixing the route

Go over driving times, parking, kitchen hours, the state of the sea, trails and bookings. Drop a stop if the programme only works with no delays. Include water, sun protection and a real margin for getting back.

Share the itinerary with the group and make sure mobility, interests and pace are compatible. The best route is not the one with the most places in it.

How to decide where to stay

If sea and eating out come first, the coast works as a base; if you are after hiking and the villages, expect journeys inland. Check parking and transport before choosing on views or price alone.

A good base cuts journeys across several days and lets you walk home after a meal or an activity. Match the accommodation to the experiences you are actually going to book.

Keep a short version of the itinerary

For each day, identify one essential stop, one optional and one alternative for bad weather. Add the address, the parking and a cut-off time. That short version is more useful while travelling than a long list.

Drop any stop that forces you back along the same road without a clear reason. The time you recover can go to eating, walking or resting.
